Pinpoint your favorite place to spend time outside of your home. This place could be a coffee shop down the street, a favorite hiking trail, a bistro in Paris, or really anywhere in the world. Why do you like to spend time there? Do you spend time there alone, with friends, or with family? Do certain moods attract you to this place? Places are special because of the emotional attachment we have with them. Certain places, however, are better suited than others at creating emotional responses. Understanding why you gravitate towards certain places helps to define the emotional responses your home should elicit. When this is applied rigorously to your design process, your house will become more than a list of rooms and materials, it will become a dynamic facilitator of experiences and memories.
